Monday, August 19, 2013

Kansas, KS. (Aug. 19). Saturday at Kansas Speedway with Stevenson Motorsports co-driver Matt Bell, John Edwards earned his fifth career victory in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. The win marked the second CTSCC win for Bell and Edwards this season. Edwards and co-driver Robin Liddell also earned their 6th top-five finish of the season in the Rolex Sports Car Series.

Matt Bell qualified the No. 9 Camaro and within the first ten laps of the race, the Camaro was up to third. By lap 23, Bell successfully made the pass for second before the first round of pit stops took place. Ten laps later, Bell led the GS class with a 15.668 second lead before pulling into the pits under caution. The Camaro rejoined with John Edwards at the wheel in second after the remaining GS pit stops cycled through.

After the restart, Edwards battled with the third place car of Shelby Blackstock as the two charged after race leader Jade Buford. With 43 minutes remaining, the track went full course caution again with Blackstock leading Edwards. Blackstock pitted under the caution, moving Edwards to the lead with 30 minutes left. Two more full course cautions came out before the end of the race, but Edwards led to the checkered flag, leading twenty-seven laps total.

"The car was great," said Edwards. "I don't think we expected this to be one of our tracks, but that didn't stop us from really focusing on the set up and just trying to make the car as good as we could make it." With two race events remaining, Edwards and Bell hold strong to second in the CTSSC driver championship, 51 points away from the title.

Almost an hour after earning the GS win, Edwards started fourth in the Stevenson Motorsports 57 Camaro in the Rolex Sports Car Series SFP Grand Prix. Edwards and co-driver Robin Liddell kept the Camaro near the top five for most of the 118 lap race, and ultimately finished 4th in the GT class. After earning the 4th place finish, Edwards and Liddell sit third in the driver championship standings, just three points away from the driver championship title.

Next for Edwards will be another double header with GRAND-AM and Stevenson Motorsports at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, September 7-8.
