The inaugural GRAND-AM of The Americas presented by GAINSCO and TOTAL weekend proved to be a difficult event for John Edwards and Stevenson Motorsports. Forced to miss the test and practice days due to illness, Edwards only completed three laps on track before qualifying for both races Friday afternoon. The 21 year old racer qualified the No. 9 Camaro in fourth position for Round 2 of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. In the first lap, Edwards claimed and held third position until an ST class car had contact with the Stevenson Camaro in lap 10, causing Edwards to spin in turn one. Edwards recovered, and rejoined the field in fourth position, which he held until the first full course caution of the event, in which he passed the driving duties onto co-driver Matt Bell. Bell rejoined the field in 11^th, but worked his way up to fight for third position. For the second time during the event, the Stevenson Motorsports Camaro became a victim of contact, this time from a GS car. The team finished the race in tenth, putting the team in third for the provisional Championship points.

With Edwards behind the wheel, the team earned another strong qualifying position, slated to start fourth for Round 2 of the Rolex Sports Car Series. Debris in the filter led the team to do an engine change the night before the race. Edwards started Saturday’s race at the rear of the pack in 16^th place, but gained five positions within the first lap. Gaining positions with every lap, by lap 14 John was closing in on the fourth position, when an aggressive move by the 73 car of Patrick Lindsey led to damaging contact. “It’s always frustrating to put in all the time and money into a weekend and just get punted by someone in your race,” said Edwards. “We had a good car. It was the best it had been all weekend.” The Stevenson Motorsports Camaro sat in the pits to receive repairs for five laps before co-driver Robin Liddell rejoined the field and finished the inaugural race five laps down in 15^th position.

The Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge and Rolex Sports Car Series next head to Barber Motorsports Park for Round 3 in Birmingham, Alabama, April 3-6.
